The Magic of Disney Animation opens September 14, 2026, at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. For families, the important part isn’t simply the date: this is a collection of indoor play, drawing, film, and character experiences rather than one attraction with one queue.

That mix could make the reimagined Animation Courtyard especially useful on hot or rainy park days. It also means guests may need to choose which pieces matter most instead of assuming the entire complex will fit into a quick stop.

What Opens on September 14

The Magic of Disney Animation will occupy the building topped by the Sorcerer Mickey hat in Animation Courtyard. Disney has confirmed four named experiences: Drawn to Wonderland, Off the Page, Olaf Draws, and the Once Upon A Studio Theater. An animated art gallery and other interactive details are also part of the complex.

The surrounding courtyard is already open with a Burbank studio-lot look, shaded places to pause, character details, and Pluto’s Corner. Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live is operating nearby, while The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure continues in the Studio Theater.

Why This Is More Than a Character Area

Hollywood Studios has plenty of high-demand rides and scheduled shows, but fewer spaces where younger children can move at their own pace. This project adds several low-intensity options in one corner of the park. A preschooler may care most about the Alice in Wonderland playground, while an older child or adult animation fan may prioritize a drawing class.

That variety is useful, but it creates a planning catch. Character encounters, drawing sessions, and theater presentations may each have separate waits or capacity limits. Until Disney posts the operating details, allow more time than you would for a single meet-and-greet.

Drawn to Wonderland Adds Indoor Active Play

Drawn to Wonderland is an indoor playground based on Mary Blair’s concept art for Disney’s Alice in Wonderland. Disney describes areas inspired by the Mad Tea Party, the Mad Hatter’s house, the Queen of Hearts’ rose garden, and the Cheshire Cat’s Tulgey Wood.

This may become the most practical part of the complex for families with younger children. It offers active play without requiring another ride vehicle or theater seat, and the indoor setting should help during afternoon heat or storms. Disney has not yet posted age guidance, height limits, capacity rules, or whether timed entry will ever be used.

Off the Page Brings Characters Into the Animation Process

Off the Page places character encounters inside settings based on animation departments. Disney says guests may see Mulan in Story, Rapunzel in Layout, Chip ‘n’ Dale in Hand-Drawn Animation, Donald and Daisy in Computer Animation, Goofy in Lighting, and Stitch in Effects.

The word “may” matters. Disney has presented these as possible characters, not a promise that every one will appear continuously. Check the My Disney Experience app and posted signs on your park day before building a schedule around a specific character.

Olaf Draws Revives a Hollywood Studios Tradition

Olaf Draws is a character-drawing attraction led by an Olaf Audio-Animatronics figure and recorded guidance from Disney Animation artists. Possible subjects include Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Genie, Moana, Stitch, Olaf, Ursula, Judy Hopps, and Nick Wilde.

The format recalls the hands-on animation classes many longtime Hollywood Studios guests remember, but the new version wraps the lesson in a more produced show. Guests who care about a particular sketch should expect the subject to vary rather than assuming they can choose from the full list.

Once Upon A Studio Theater and Animated Art

The dedicated theater will show Disney’s Once Upon A Studio short with added in-room effects. An adjacent gallery will display Disney Animation artwork that can spring to life through new animation created for the experience.

These options may be easier to fit between Lightning Lane reservations than a long ride queue, but show cycles still matter. Guests arriving just after a presentation begins may wait longer than the film’s runtime suggests.

How to Plan for Opening Season

  • Give the area a time block. Multiple queues and activities can add up.
  • Check character listings that morning. The lineup may rotate.
  • Use it during heat or rain. Several major components are indoors.
  • Pair it with nearby shows. Little Mermaid and Disney Jr. can create a lower-intensity stretch of the day.
  • Expect early interest. The September opening arrives during Halloween season, when Hollywood Studios already draws evening crowds.

What Disney Has Not Announced Yet

Disney has not published daily hours, Lightning Lane access, playground age rules, drawing-class capacity, or an opening-day reservation system. Those details will decide whether families can browse freely or need a more deliberate plan.
