Animal Kingdom’s rope-drop waiting areas have moved out of the Oasis and onto Discovery Island. The new setup gives guests more room after they enter the park, but it also makes the first-attraction decision more important because three separate checkpoints now control access toward Pandora, Africa, Asia, and the former DinoLand area.
BlogMickey observed the procedure on July 16 and believes it is intended as a continuing change. Disney has not published a formal permanent-policy announcement, so checkpoint positions and release timing can still shift as Cast Members refine the process.

What Changed at Animal Kingdom Rope Drop
Guests previously moved through the tapstiles and then waited in the Oasis, the narrow network of paths between the entrance and Discovery Island. Early Entry eligibility checks and regular-admission holding now happen farther inside the park on Discovery Island.
The Oasis is now a through-route. That should reduce the shoulder-to-shoulder feeling of the old wait and place guests closer to the bridge they will use once their admission window opens. More space does not mean earlier ride access for everyone, however. Guests without Early Entry eligibility still wait until the park’s official opening.
Which of the Three Checkpoints Should You Use?
| Checkpoint | Best for | Likely pressure |
|---|---|---|
| Island Mercantile / flamingos | Pandora and Africa | Highest because of Flight of Passage |
| Near Zootopia | Asia and Expedition Everest | Moderate; Zootopia has a separate check |
| Former DinoLand bridge | Alternate route toward Everest | Lowest until Tropical Americas opens |
The Pandora and Africa checkpoint is likely to draw the biggest crowd because Avatar Flight of Passage remains Animal Kingdom’s most common rope-drop target. Guests prioritizing Kilimanjaro Safaris also use this side, which can add pressure from two different touring plans.
The Asia checkpoint is the direct choice for Expedition Everest. It also sits near Zootopia: Better Zoogether, but Disney was still checking Early Entry eligibility at that attraction’s entrance during the observed morning. Do not assume passing the land checkpoint automatically clears every experience.
The former DinoLand bridge is currently the quietest option and can function as another way toward Everest. Its importance should grow when the Tropical Americas project opens, currently expected in 2027.
What Happens for Guests Without Early Entry?
All guests can enter through the main tapstiles when Disney begins the initial park-entry process, but only eligible Disney Resort and select-hotel guests can continue past the Early Entry checkpoints before regular opening. Other guests wait in marked areas on Discovery Island.
During the July 16 observation, Discovery Island shops stayed closed until the official park opening. Tree of Life PhotoPass photographers were the useful exception. That gives non-resort guests something to do, but it is not a shopping or breakfast head start.
Do Not Copy One Morning’s Exact Times
On the observed day, security opened shortly after 7 a.m., guests entered around 7:15, Early Entry began at 7:30, and the park opened to everyone at 8. Those timestamps describe one morning, not a guaranteed daily schedule.
Check My Disney Experience for the current park opening and Early Entry time, then arrive with enough margin for parking, security, and the tapstiles. Disney can release a checkpoint early, but building a plan around an unposted early release is risky.
How This Changes Your First-Ride Strategy
- Flight of Passage: arrive early and use the Pandora/Africa checkpoint.
- Kilimanjaro Safaris: use the same checkpoint, but remember the attraction’s operating time can differ from park opening.
- Expedition Everest: compare the Asia and former DinoLand routes based on the visible crowd.
- Zootopia: expect a separate eligibility check near the attraction.
- Lightning Lane users: rope drop and Lightning Lane are separate decisions; our Lightning Lane Multi Pass guide explains the paid option.
What Could Still Change
Disney has not posted a permanent map or detailed public instructions for the three-checkpoint system. Cast Member staffing, queue tape, and the exact non-resort holding spaces may evolve. Follow signs and Cast Member directions rather than relying on an old screenshot.
