The Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin has finished the showpiece of its $275 million transformation: a two-story convention annex attached to the Dolphin. The eye-catching number is huge, but leisure travelers should know what actually opened before expecting a new hotel wing or park perk.

What Opened in the Walt Disney World Dolphin Expansion

The resort marked the expansion with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 11, 2026. The new annex adds a 38,000-square-foot Upper Peninsula Ballroom, 40,000 square feet of lower-level multi-purpose space, and 38,000 square feet of pre-function areas.

It connects directly to the Dolphin’s existing Pacific Convention Center. The official Swan and Dolphin expansion page also lists programmable lighting, a fiber-optic and Ethernet backbone, simulcast infrastructure, reversible escalators, and a freight elevator.

Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Expansion by the Numbers

  • $275 million: the announced value of the multiyear property transformation
  • More than 450,000 square feet: the resort’s current total meeting space
  • Nine ballrooms: across the Swan, Dolphin, and Swan Reserve
  • 106 meeting and breakout rooms: in the combined complex
  • 2,619 rooms and suites: across the three hotels
  • 23 restaurants and lounges: on the resort property

Those totals come from the resort’s current fast facts. WDWNT described an even larger indoor-and-outdoor event footprint, but the resort’s own page is the clearest reference for the meeting-space total travelers are likely to see quoted.

What the Dolphin Convention Expansion Means for Hotel Guests

The biggest distinction is simple: this is convention space, not a new block of hotel rooms. It does not add an attraction, change theme-park admission, or create a new Disney resort benefit.

That makes the opening more important to meeting planners than to a family choosing between hotels. The leisure appeal of the Swan and Dolphin still comes from its EPCOT-area location, its walkability to EPCOT and Hollywood Studios, its restaurant lineup, and the Disney benefits attached to eligible stays. Our Disney World resort guide can help put those features in context.

Could Bigger Dolphin Events Affect a Disney World Stay?

Larger conferences could make the Dolphin’s lobby, restaurants, and shared transportation areas feel busier during major events. That is a reasonable possibility, not a promised day-to-day effect; the resort has not published an event calendar or occupancy forecast tied to the opening.

If a quiet resort-focused stay matters, ask about large groups before booking and compare cancellation terms rather than assuming the $275 million project changes every visit. Guests attending a convention, on the other hand, now have substantially more event space without leaving the EPCOT resort area.

The $275 Million Swan and Dolphin Makeover Started Earlier

The ribbon-cutting completes the convention annex, not every part of a brand-new project launched this month. The resort announced the broader transformation in October 2024, and its official press-release archive says the investment also covered existing meeting spaces, technology, and Swan guest rooms.

All 756 Swan rooms and suites were reported complete in March 2025. That context matters: guests checking in now are seeing the finish line of a phased resort investment, while the September 2026 milestone is specifically the new Dolphin event building.
